The IBS Elimination Diet and Cookbook Review

The IBS Elimination Diet and Cookbook is written by Patsy Catsos, a registered dietitian nutritionist with two degrees in nutrition. The author has dealt with digestive issues herself which led to her calling as a medical nutrition therapist and she’s able to deeply emphasize with folks who suffer from painful and disabling GI symptoms.

As someone whose dealt with symptoms of IBS for most of my life I was very intrigued by this book and what it offered. This book talks about the benefit of a low-FODMAP diet and the effect its had for relieving IBS symptoms, particularly with pain and bloating. Since the word FODMAP started surfacing around the internet over the past year or two I’ve really wanted to learn more about it. FODMAPS is an abbreviation referring to Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols. These are complex names for a collection of molecules found in food, that can be poorly absorbed by some people. With this book you can conduct a dietary experiment to learn how FODMAPs affect you by eating low-FODMAP foods for a few weeks, then reintroducing high-FODMAP foods and monitoring your symptoms.

This book does a great job of breaking down all the information to where it’s easy to understand and follow. The program begins with the elimination phase, moves on to the reintroduction phase, and concludes with strategies for sustaining a varied and nutritious diet. Step-by-step instructions and guides are included such as how to record symptoms, meal planning and a sample menu to help you get started. Inside the book you will also find fifty-six delicious low-FODMAP recipes,  as well as tips and plans for eating when you don’t have the time to cook every meal from scratch. Each recipe is suitable for the elimination phase of the program.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone who has struggled with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and wants a more holistic approach for their IBS symptoms. Most importantly its all about eating well and finding foods that help YOU feel your best.
